HORSE AND MULE PACKERS INFORMATION BULLETIN #6

At Times Stuff Just Happens!

Life is an adventure from one wreck to the next.  If you don’t believe us, just look at your check book!

We are working with living breathing animals that think and thus have an opinion. They usually go along with our decisions, but every once in awhile, they can and will throw in a field change to the program.  When this happens, you can get your knickers all bunched up or you can chalk it up to experience.  Once you get it sorted out, you will be wiser and usually a bit more humble.  It could have been worse.

It is always a bit of a challenge getting the first load out of the trail head, until the string settles down and goes to work. In this photo, the lead-pack-horse, Moby, thinks he ought to be up front.  Because he is a horse, Ms. Kitty will not push him back (all mule mamas are horses, thus dominate).  But the real fun was at the back of the string; Liz (with spots) is actually tied behind her sister, the brown mule Darla.  This was a position she had enjoyed for quit a while.  The trail narrowed, forcing Liz back into line.  But as soon as the pack string behind her moved up to close, she forced herself ahead of Darla.  This caused a heck of a mess.  Who could know she would change her mind.  At times, the only way to explain a wreck is that "it just happens."
